A cop show is a tough sell for me, but one as a goofy sitcom intrigued me. How do you handle crimes like murder while still being Andy Samberg-style funny? The answer appears to be mostly… misdirection? And old lady gunk.
Of course, it’s hard to tell from the pilot if Brooklyn Nine-Nine will be handling serious crimes or wacky hijinks each week. The show has already drawn some comparisons to Parks and Recreation, which features a similarly diverse workplace cast. Of course, the parks department is considerably lower stakes (although not to Leslie Knope!) so it will be interesting to see how B9-9 handles the balancing act.
The most delightful part of the show by far is Andre Braugher’s Captain Holt. Finally rescued from the sunken submarine of Last Resort, Braugher is great as the relatively straight (except not, har har) man to Andy Samberg’s Det. Jake Peralta. The rest of the cast is moderately enjoyable – I did find Chelsea Peretti’s gossipy Gina adorable. To continue the P&R comparison, it takes time with an ensemble cast to build consistently amusing personality quirks, but I think they can probably get there.
Long Term Prediction:
Tuesdays are kind of crowded, but this show has DVR Saturday mornings written all over it.
